has been seen that the charts used in conjunction with DGPS are
very accurate. The ships position derived by Gyro and visual orientation
has been verified by the computer’s assessment of the ships
location. The added confidence that this gives is most useful, especially
during blind pilotage or in unfamiliar waters.”
Alliance
AND ARCS
The Ship Management Office at NATO’s Saclant Undersea Research
Centre in Italy is currently involved in a project leading to the
specification, procurement and installation of an Integrated Navigational
System onboard the NATO Research vessel ‘Alliance’. ARCS
charts have been used in the project and a year of operational experience
has now been gained. The Head of the Office has expressed his views
on ARCS in the following terms:-
